When Edwards Lifesciences required a full mechanical building services package for a new research, development, and production facility in Ireland, they needed a mechanical contractor with proven experience across multiple disciplines, a robust quality management system, and the ability to operate within a highly regulated, pharmaceutical-grade environment. The Challenge
This project combined research and development spaces, ISO-classified clean rooms, active production lines, and general building services under a single coordinated contract. Each element carried its own technical demands, and all had to be delivered in a sequenced programme alongside multiple trades working to a tight schedule.
The clean room HVAC systems required precise control of air change rates, pressure differentials, temperature, and humidity – with installation accuracy and documentation discipline critical to meeting the client’s regulatory and validation requirements. Across the wider project, strict Permit to Work controls, detailed quality records, and close coordination with validation engineers and the principal contractor added further complexity throughout.
The Solution
Fergal Warren Mechanical mobilised an experienced, multi-disciplinary team and worked in close coordination with the principal contractor, the client’s engineering and validation teams, and specialist contractors throughout the programme.
Clean room HVAC systems were installed to the validated design, fully commissioned, and air balanced before validation activities began, with comprehensive commissioning records produced to the client’s required format. Process piping and compressed air installations were supported by full weld documentation and material traceability from day one. The fire suppression and BMS scopes were delivered in close coordination with the relevant specialists, ensuring seamless integration across all building services. The complete mechanical package was handed over on programme and to the standard a world-class medical device facility demands.
