Busy Kids Creche

Busy Kids Creche is a busy, well-established childcare facility providing care and early education to young children across the local community. Like many buildings of its age, the facility’s heating system had become inefficient and unreliable — no longer fit for purpose in a building that depends on a consistent, comfortable environment throughout the day.

Fergal Warren Mechanical was appointed to carry out a full heating system upgrade, replacing the existing installation with a new natural gas system and bringing the hot water services up to current standards, including full Legionella prevention compliance.

The central challenge of this project had nothing to do with the technical scope — it was the environment itself. The creche could not close. Children and staff were present throughout the working day, and the building remained fully live from the moment our team arrived on site to the moment they left.

Working in a live childcare environment imposed demands that go well beyond a standard occupied building. Noise had to be kept to an absolute minimum, particularly during rest periods when young children were sleeping throughout the building. The compact, busy layout of the facility left very little room to manoeuvre materials and equipment without disrupting the day-to-day operation of the creche. Every aspect of the installation had to be planned and managed with the safety, comfort, and routine of the children and staff as the overriding priority.

Fergal Warren Mechanical planned the project in close consultation with the creche management to establish a working method that could be delivered safely and with minimal disruption. Work was scheduled to avoid the most sensitive periods of the day, with noise-generating activities planned around rest times and quiet periods.

The team worked in a compact, methodical manner throughout, keeping work areas tidy and contained and ensuring access and egress throughout the building was maintained at all times. Communication with the creche staff was maintained throughout the project, so that any changes to the daily work schedule could be flagged and managed in advance.

The new natural gas heating system was installed, commissioned, and tested to deliver the reliable, efficient performance the building needed. The hot water system was completed with a full Legionella prevention flush, bringing the facility into full compliance with current water safety requirements.

The project was completed without disruption to the creche’s operation — delivered with the care and consideration that a working environment for young children demands.
